Historical background of the material and its applications：
What does come up in your mind if you hear the word “Titanium”?
Most probably you will associate the word titanium the concept of “light and strong metal used in the aerospace environment” or “an expensive but nice material for the golf clubs” and many other interesting applications in which this innovative material is currently applied. However, we believe there are still few people who associate the word “titanium” with “Beautiful material that can refract the light in multiple colours”.
The Kroll methodology for the extraction of titanium from the titan ore by chemical reaction was developed 70 years ago. While the most commonly employed metal such as copper, steel, and aluminum which extraction and application started 10.000, 3000, and 130 respectively can be considered as “old” materials, titanium is a “young” material.
When we say “young” we mean that several possible applications are yet to be discovered.
As we stated at the beginning, the image of titanium is a metal with excellent mechanical properties such as high resistance, corrosion resistance and biocompatibility applied in the field of aerospace and medical industry. However, it is rare for the average consumer to be in contact with such material. It is however not well known that, by adjustng the thickness of the oxidized film on the titanium surface, the reflected colour change, making the titanium a “beautiful” material.
That is why our attention was fully drawned by a product that we successfully developed called WEBTi-F. Through WEBTi-F, we want as many people to realize the “beauty” of this innovative material and at the same time to make them feel the still uncovered possibilities that hides.
Company and product history：
WEBTi-F is produced by TOHO Titanium, a company operating in the field of titanium manufacturing for 60 years. We can say that TOHO Titanium accompanied step by step the titanium since its “birth”.
While WEBTi-F was originally thought as a product to be applied in high corrosion resistence electrode taking advantage of the excellent corrosion resistance, the comment of one of our customer who was amazed by the beauty of the fibers of titanium that looked like japanese traditional paper, ignited the spark that led to a new product.
We, that look WEBTi-F as a pure functional material, realized that there was the possbility to develop a product in different direction from the common applications. After the anodizing treatment of the titanium, we try to illuminate the surface of the titanium and the result was surprising. The surface of WEBTi-F was a mixture of light diffraction, light reflection and shadows: a never seen fantastic light effects.
Given the satisfying results of our tests, it was obvious for us to turn WEBTi-F in a Design material, and we think that this innovative material showed the hidden beauty of the titanium. As we previously said, through WEBTi-F, we really want as many people to realize the “beauty” of this innovative material and at the same time to make them feel the still uncovered possibilities that hides.
